Friborgo, fantastica Friborgo. La città che divide in due la Svizzera. Confine più o meno immaginario (ed in questo luogo più o meno psicologico) tra Romandia e Svizzera tedesca. Trentaseimila abitanti (la metà di Lugano, il doppio di Bellinzona) e una scena musicale paragonabile ad una metropoli. È proprio da questa città che ci muoveremo per incontrare la seconda etichetta discografica di questo nostro “girovagare” tra Svizzera ed Italia.
Saïko Records non è la più grande ma, senza ombra di dubbio, è una delle migliori. Qualche nome? Toboggan, Brutus, To The Vanishing Point, Feauturing Jim, Kassette e Beautiful Leopard che, non a caso, sono una delle mie band preferite. In questa lista ne mancano tanti altri anche se siamo sicuri che nessuno si offenderà. Gente in gamba, piena di passione, gente che ha voglia di aprirsi al mondo senza badare a scemenze come rivalità o invidia. Fanno il loro prodotto, con caparbietà, e riescono ad entusiasmarsi anche del lavoro degli altri. Una dote piuttosto rara nella paranoica scena musicale.
Abbiamo incontrato Chris per scoprire più da vicino il loro mondo e tentando di capire il loro modo di concepire la musica e, soprattutto, la loro idea di etichetta discografica.
Quand’è iniziata l’avventura di Saiko Records e come mai?
È iniziato tutto nel 2002; più che altro per rispondere alle nostre necessità. I Tastless, una band della nostra regione, avevano appena registrato il loro album di debutto e volevano pubblicarlo alle loro condizioni. In più c’erano un paio d’altri gruppi attivi sulla scena che chiedevano aiuto per le proprie produzioni. È così che parte dei Tastless decisero di dar vita ad una propria etichetta discografica: Saiko Records. Abbiamo trovato subito, per fortuna, un ottimo distributore come Irascibile. Più o meno continuiamo a lavorare in questo modo.
Chi si nasconde dietro Saiko Records?
L’intera etichetta gira prevalentemente attorno al lavoro di Mario Weiss, uno dei fondatori di Saiko Records. È un pochino l’uomo “tuttofare” occupandosi della direzione ed occupandosi delle questioni amministrative. Poi c’è Guillaume Ducommun che si occupa di fare da “booking” per alcuni dei nostri artisti ma anche e soprattutto del sito internet e della grafica. In realtà, dietro di loro, c’è un gruppo di persone a cui è stato assegnato un preciso compito per promuovere al meglio ogni nostra uscita discografica. Nadine Mojado si occupa delle radio, della tv e della stampa per la Svizzera tedesca. Cynthia Darioly si occupa della Romandia mentre il sottoscritto è impegnato con i web-media e si occupa delle vendite online.
Che tipo di band promuovete?
Ci occupiamo di band in cui crediamo. Pur tentando di mantenere uno “spirito libero e aperto” a livello di stili musicali, possiamo certamente affermare di concentrarci sull’indie. Molte delle nostre band, come Tasteless, Black Cargoes, Make It Pink, Brutus o i Toboggan sono, in un modo o nell’altro, riconducibili a questo stile anche se ognuno aggiunge i propri ingredienti. Però proponiamo anche crossover (Underschool Element), Post-core (Grace, Berserk For Tea Time) e una serie di variazioni alla musica folk (Kassette, Chapter, Farlow, Disown). Amiamo queste band e vogliamo “difendere” i loro prodotti in ogni modo.
Cosa avete in programma per il futuro?
Ci sono un paio di dischi pronti per uscire ma è ancora troppo presto per parlarne. In ogni noi siamo sempre alla ricerca di nuove soluzioni per farci conoscere il più lontano possibile. Stiamo per esempio cercare uno “scambio” con altre etichette perché, e questo è ormai chiaro, tutte condividono più o meno gli stessi problemi e, lavorando insiene, forse si riuscirà a trovare una soluzione. Per il 2010 cercheremo di massimizzare il nostro impatto e, ovviamente, pubblicare la miglior musica possibile.
Come giudicate il panorama musicale svizzero e, più in particolare, della vostra regione?
Variegato, vivo e in buona salute. Friborgo è prevalentemente una città di studenti e per questo motivo la scena musicale è molto presente. Ci sono molti gruppi che tentano di conquistare il mondo! Non dimentichiamo che ci sono alcuni club mitici come il Bad Bonn, il Fri-Son o il Nouveau Monde a portata di mano e questo aiuta molto. Ultimamente abbiamo notato un piccolo calo di chi si reca ai concerti ma, probabilmente, è una semplice parte del processo. Se confrontiamo la nostra situazione con il resto della Svizzera possiamo ritenerci fieri e soddisfatti di quanto succede dalle nostre parti. Ci sono regioni che praticamente non hanno una scena musicale o locali di musica dal vivo. Poi ci sono invece città come Lucerna, Zurigo, Basilea o Losanna che vanno un pochino per conto loro. Noi siamo nel pieno centro di qualcosa di ancora più grande che potrebbe saltar fuori.
